Canon, Nikon, where is the best place to buy one?

Canon and Nikon are indeed the best. They were with film, and they still are with digital. The owe their reputation to fantastic lenses and practically bullet proof bodies. If you absolutely need a camera that will take 8 razor sharp images per second whether you're in the Arctic or in the jungle, those are your brands.
Of course, with pro cameras, you pay pro prices. Those cameras are +$4500 for the body and +$1000 for every lens.
Thankfully however, as with car brands, all the goodness from the top of the line models trickles down to the versions that we mortals can afford. Canon and Nikon both have semi-pro models for under $2000 (Canon 30D and Nikon D200 - I have of of these myself), and entry level models for under $1000 (Canon 400D and Nikon D80). Nikon even has a budget model D50 for around $550.
Where to shop depends on your location. In the USA, try B&H, Ritz Cameras, and Beach Cameras.

I agree with OMG. Vote for his answer. To choose the "best," just decide how much you actually want to spend and go from there with his answer. It is possible to get a Nikon or Canon camera with one excellent lens for $5-6,000 or more. If you want the best.

I can personally vouch for his recommendation of the D200, D80 (based on my D70s) and D50, if you don't really have $5-6,000 to spend.

The best professional digital camera has to be the new Hasslebald. But at almost $50,000 who can afford one.
