Excuse me, but you're a very ignorant person to ask such a question. I'm a Turkish woman and I hate the fact that you ask this question. In Turkey, women are free to wear whatever they want, and free to do whatever they want.

You won't be arrested in Turkey for not wearing a burka. They don't care in Turkey if you show your hair in public. In fact most Turkish women do.

In fact you might be arrested in Turkey FOR wearing a burka. In fact outside of Iran, women don't wear burkas, which are like tents.

The scarf that some Islamic women wear on their heads is called a hijob. Though the name for this varies from country to country.

The modern Turkish state, which I think was founded in 1921, was founded as a secular state and all symbols of of the old middle east were banned. This included the veil, fez, and turbans. Head scarves for women are tolerated somewhat. But, I am told are technically illegal.

You will find the Turks to be friendly, hospitable, patient and helpful. But you should admit that you don't understand their customs and let them know that you might be making mistakes. Respect is a big thing there so if you let them know that you respect them they will be quite forgiving.

Remember that in Turkey men and women still live in quite separate worlds so flirting is something that you don't want to do.

Sarcasm and nicknames are also a bad idea as the Turks will tend to perceive these as disrespectful.

In short try to learn something about their customs and show respect and you will probably have a great time. Turkish food is great.

Honey, whats the deal between burka and arrestments, can u show me? Coz I CANNOT see it. I dont think you will. Plus, Turkish Government is insisting on NOT to wear burka. Maybe that makes some sense?
Check out the Country Factbook of Turkey, you will see that Its a secular country. Meaning not radical. islamic. Plus, you ve got freedom to wear whatever you want. Just make sure, if there is something covering your body enuff. Coz, it would be the same if you walked around the city nude even here ,in the center of Freedom, the USA: Makes aby sense to you? Regards.

I really do not understand why people think that we wear burka in Turkey. I am travelling to Iran so often even there women do not wear burka, just a tunic and a loose head scarf.
You can put any cloth you like you wear in US. No problem, we do not wear burkas.

Of corz NO. Türkiye is not a fanatic Islam country like Saudi Arabia. Wear or do not wear burka, only it depends on your mind. Even topless sunbathing is not forbidden in Türkiye in spite of being forbidden in some European countries and some states of the USA.

And this is for "antmanbee" above, I didnt understand the relation between burka and genocide.

NO ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

That is an ignorant question but I am going to answer it anyway.

Turkish women do not wear burkas. Most modern Turkish women dress just like American, Canadian or French women dress, only a little more conservatively. If you want to fit in, wear a long skirt, a conservative blouse and a long coat which is fashionable in Istanbul. However, jeans and a simple blouse is just fine.

Do not wear tank tops or sleeveless tops, shorts or short skirts and dresses. You are welcome to wear them, but you will be stared at. Many women in Turkey cover their hair with a scarf called a hijab, but it is not required and not even expected of a visitor. You may want to bring a scarf to cover your hair for visiting mosques and sacred sites. It is required to cover your hair there.

Don't worry. Turkish people are among the friendliest in the world and as long as you have a basic sense of propriety, you will be fine. Also, most mosques have scarves to borrow when entering the mosque. You should remove your shoes also, so wear nice socks when you visit mosques.

When you get back, I want to borrow your burka because there's this bank I want to rob around the corner. Here in Philly, if you want to make a fashion statement in the security camera photos that appear in the next day's Daily News, the burka is the "dress for success" haute couture.

I dont even now what that is but from thecomments I am assuming it is a head scar. The answer is absolutely not. There are topless people in fact sometimes all nude i a lot of beaches around Turkey. People are very modern. In fact I know that you are NOT allowed to wear a head scarf in schools ad public buildings.
