You have several good answers there..however ramond d's mother isn't one of them..I would certainly avoid her puppies..
The female is fully mature and able to be a good mom at about 2 years, in the smaller breeds, and 3 years in the slower maturing breeds, such as the breed I raise..
You don't want to steal the calcium and bone development of the mom before she is full developed herself, as it will cause her to be more prone to bone problems in her old age..

the safest recommendation, is to breed the heat after her second birthday..for males, it is recommended 18 months, with 2 years being safer..as many genetic defects don't show up until about 2years old..such as contact and food allergies, leading to serious skin disorders, hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, etc....All hereditary..

Answer: Just like a human, you shouldn't let a dog get pregnant before she is 16 or 18 years old! Because dogs are the same as humans! (Oh, please pick me as the best answer!)

Honestly, asking questions like this indicate that you are a total novice to breeding dogs. Please buy some books about breeding. Yes, it will cost money! You might even find some good ones on loan from the library.

For free, you can go to any of the thousands of sites on the net regarding breeding dogs. Go to your specific breed and narrow the sites down to mere hundreds.

First and foremost, though, you should contact the breeder of your dog and ask this completely basic question and get answers to this as well as the hundreds of other questions you need to know before putting a female with a male and possibly bringing more dogs into this already overcrowded dog society.

How old should a dog be to be breeding. Sigh.

Most breeds it's 2 years. Some of the slower maturing breeds it can be 3 years. AKC doesn't recommend breeding before 18 months, but some of the health testing you do before breeding cannot be done until the dog is 2 years old.

For a female, you shouldn't breed before 1 1/2 years old, at the very minimum. A lot of people wait until she is 2 - 2 1/2 years old to mature enough to look after her pups.

For a male, most people breed him at 2 years of age, though some people breed at 1 1/2 years.

A male dog can mate 6 months old but a very old male might have some sperm defects or abnormal sperms. A female dog can mate and be pregnant from 7 to 8 months old and it should mate in its menstrual period- a female dog has a maximum of 14 days of menstrual period, you should take the opportunity for letting it mate in the first 2-3 days. However, a very old female dog can have some ovarial prblems. This is applicable if you are in a hurry to have some puppies. But if you aren't really in a hurry & you would want it to be responsible enough to take care of its young, you can have it breed in an age of more than a year or so. But there's nothing wrong of having it breed 6-9 months old. My mother is a breeder of pure bred & mixed bred dogs.

First off Ramon_d, your mom sounds like a puppy mill, you do not breed babies, and thats exactly what she is doing. I do not have a problem with dogs being bred, but their are guidelines, and I suggest talking to your vet about the breed specifis of breeding, and if you don't have a vet, then you should not have a dog, they need care and prevenatives too, just like people.

I personally would not breed a dog before 2 years of age. This gives the female some time to grow up herself. She needs to let nature teach her how to be a good mother. Also, it will allow her to develop to a mature reproduction stage.

a dog should ATLEAST be over a year of age. I have a chichuahua who is 2 years and is still too young. Some dogs are too small to breed and must be over 3 pounds, or they could die or need a c section....... you may also loose the pups!

Do not breed the dog at all. There are way too many (try 5.4 million) dogs dying in shelters because there aren't enough homes for them.
