Symptoms of Depression:
*persistent sadness or unhappiness
lethargy
*loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities
*irritability
*sudden change in appetite
*disruption of normal sleep pattern
*physical discomfort
*difficulty thinking or concentrating
*thoughts of suicide or death.

There are many different drugs used to treat depression. My mother rebounded quickly....in a manner of a month or two. Some people take longer.

Once you have depression, you seem to be prone to it the rest of your life; however, you recognize the symptoms earlier and get treatment faster......recovery is often much quicker.

In my case I had headaches, 'n didn't feel a need to to things, ie. I would rather of stayed in bed all day. I didn't see the need to take a shower etc. I didn't fit in. I went to the supermarket and felt like an alien, like people could look through me. I had thoughts of drinking loads of pills to end it all, stupid things made me sad. I lost my appetite, the list is endless. My doctor prescribed some meds, I took them for about 6 months. One day I stopped 'coz I realized I didn't want to live on pills for the rest of my life. The first two weeks I had withdrawal symptoms, but after that it was ok.

Every situation is different though. If you are on medication you should not stop before speaking to your doctor. Depression is a very complex illness, and it should be treated with care.

The best of luck to you! Stay strong.

I'm not a doctor, but i've known people with depression who over time and changes in the courses of their lives have gotten over it. I'm sure at times medication is needed, but i think depression which is a temporary thing (even if it lasts 10 years!) has a lot of circumstantial and psychological causes.

Some people feel better from changing their habits, by exercising, taking the time to examine their thoughts and emotions, dealing with past issues, changing the way they live and so forth.

I guess what i'm saying is that i think from my observation, that depression *can* be a combination of many many things, and that sometimes changing the more mundane things before adopting medication is worth a try.

I have been a Clinical Depressed all of my young years, and have been medicated with many different meds. I found that the best solution is take the meds and seek counseling, or find someone that you can confide in to relieve some tension.
Suicidal thoughts and sever anger towards others is defiantly a sign that you need help. Others are not wanting to eat, eating to much, over sleeping, not sleeping enough...there are many. But if you find your inner self and get in touch with your feelings you will be able to cope better with your stress and the depression will fade. I have been on many meds and the best ones that I have encountered are Zoloft and Prozac. Celexa is a great one too. I felt happy, I couldn't get upset and I felt the edge just getting smaller and I could continue with my life. I am currently taking Zoloft and it really helps me cope with being a parent and the stress of others. Don't let people get you down. Put on a smile, and believe in yourself.

Symptoms can include some or all of the following .. sleeplessness, loss of apetite, sex drive and interest in most things. It's more important to know what's causing the depression rather than just hope for the doctor to prescribe some magic 'fix all pill'.

Some people can battle depression for years but if you identify your triggers (things which make you more likely to feel depressed) and alter your lifestyle accordingly it can be treated far more quickly and effectively. I wish you well.

There are many symptons of depression. If I had to pick the main one I would have to say the feeling of uselessness. I used to feel like that but I never went to the doctor because I didn't think it was that bad. But I just had real good friends. For medication, it all depends on your body and how it reacts to it. If you are taking medications and they are not working let your doctor know, but it shouldn't take more than a day or two.

DEPRESSION HAS NO RHYME OR REASON. I COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY I WAS DEPRESSED ALL THE TIME. MY DOCTOR TRIED NUMEROUS MEDICATIONS BEFORE I FOUND ONE THAT WORKS FOR ME. IT IS A PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. WHAT MAY WORK FOR ME MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU. IT USUALLY TAKES 14 DAYS TO 1 MONTH FOR MEDICATION TO BE IN YOUR SYSTEM LONG ENOUGH TO HELP YOU. AND AT LEAST TRY ONE FOR 3 MONTHS BEFORE TRYING TO CHANGE OR EVEN TRY ADDING SOMETHING ELSE TO HELP. I TAKE ZOLOFT AND I TAKE XANAX BUT THE XANAX IS FOR MY PANIC DISORDERS AND PANIC ATTACKS. BUT THE COMBINATION HAS BEEN WORKING VERY WELL WITH ME. JUST KEEP TRYING AND BE PATIENT.
