I want to buy a home theater system but am confused by all the ones out there. I don't want to pick and chose so I want to buy the 5 speakers and receiver together. What set would you recommend. I want it to sound nice and also be under $700.

DON'T GET A SONY OR PANASONIC.
They use 4 ohms or even 3 ohms for their crappy systems.
This means lots of distortion and basically bad sound.
They like to boast about wattage. Oh! I have 1000 watts.
Half the ohms means twice the watts. 1,000 watts of lame
sound is worthless.
The worst thing about their systems, is that they use digital amplification.
Digital Amplification technolgy has not matured enough for things
to sound natural and realistic. The sound is harsh and lifeless.
Maybe the newest and really expensive Digital Amplifiers that are used in professional applications may offer some decent sound.
Don't expect The HTIB's with Digital amps to use the latest advances and improvements for this technology.
They'll use older and cheaper Digital Amps, which leaves you with bad sound.
Sony and Panasonic use this technology because It is cheaper to produce digital amps. They take up less space and produce less heat than their conventional counterparts. Those Sony and Panasonic systems look very sleek and futuristic, but the sound sucks.

You are a great candidate for Home Theater In A Box or, HTIB. A lot of big brands are putting together systems like this in a single box. For a $700 budget, I would go with a Yamaha, Polk Audio or Onkyo box.

for a budget of $700 you are going to be hard pushed to find a decent seperates surround sound system (a good quality receiver alone can cost $600). but a decent home cinema kit (receiver dvd player and speakers) in one box can be had for the budget you mention and once set up sound surprisingly good. i have a sony davd-s400 home cinema set bought four years ago which i still use regularly and which i consider to be one of my better investments.
