When we're in he doesn't (he has his bed, or the rug in the front room), but when we go out he jumps on the sofa. We know because a) he drools all over it, and b) we've caught him by peeking in before coming home.

How do we stop him doing this?

LOL my dog used to do that. I forgot something, walked in the door and she was out cold on the couch. Looked at me and jumped off. I've given up on it, I just put a blanket down at night when I know she goes on there. Protects the couch and a lot easier to wash.

When the cat's away, the mice will play :)

hmm...I bet he's a smart dog. A study was done a while back with Border Collies. Hidden cameras were placed in homes and everytime the owners left, the dogs would do everything they "knew" they were not supposed to do (jump on couches, etc.)

There are training methods that you could use - they are intricate in that they require that the "punishment" or deterent (I like that word better) occurs when the owners are not present in the room. This is so that the dog does not correlate the two. I would advise contacting a certified dog trainer. Whatever you do, do not listen to Cesar Milan (The dog Whisperer) - he is a freak!

Unless you block him off from the living room, you will not be able to stop him from getting onto the sofa. If you are worried about keeping the sofa in good condition, consider doing what we do, use an old blanket and cover the sofa when you leave the house, this will help protect the fabric or leather of your sofa.

There is a can of spray that should keep him off, but if you are allergic to sprays as I am , I hold my breath while spraying and run outside for fresh air. It is possible for the dog to be attracted to the smell of synthetic materials, or any product of the petroleum Industry.
Then there are some dogs with arthritic bones will find a comfortable spot to rest in and it may not like being observed

Do you have a door you can close so he can't get to the living room? Or another room you can put him in? Maybe he feels more secure on the sofa when you're not home. He misses you.

Get a peice of that plastic carpet protector, from any carpet store..You know, the plastic that you put down in the pathway to protect a light carpet? anyyway, put it rough side up, so it has the stickers on the up-side.. dogs won't step on it..

I know that pet stores now carry sprays that are unpleasant to dogs even though we can't smell them and they're specifically for this kind of thing.

I heard that if you cover the sofa with aluminium foil it repels them.
