I'm going to sign up for college next fall and I won't have money to pay for classes upfront. I will get the G.I. Bill but must wait for the VA to send me a check once I first enroll full time(?). Do you think getting a student loan would be wise and then paying it off with my G.I. "checks"? I' m so frustrated my college doesn't have payment plans for veterans receiving VA benefits!

That should work!

I'm with you on how frustrating that is. My dh had to pay up front out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed. Very hard to do when you are raising a family.

most colleges have a VA counselor who helps you with such matters. They also allow you not to pay first tuition until the GI Bill checks come in. If your college has neither of these, I wonder what sort of college it is? I suppose a short term loan from a credit union or some such would be as productive as a "student" loan.

I am actually getting my GI Bill now. The school that I am attending offered financial assistance until I received my benefits. The GI Bill actually pays you from the time you enrolled in school. So once you receive your first payment from the VA you can pay off the financial assistance tuition.

I'm trying to think back to when I used my G.I. Bill. I think the school extended me credit until I got my check and then everything was paid up & I got whatever was left over. You might want to contact your regional VA. The number I am providing is for here in Nebraska, but I know periodically, someone in St. Louis answers (go figure), so you might be able to use it. They should be able to answer your questions and direct you in the right direction. Good Luck!
