The Iraqis have had several elections to vote in a constitution, which is largely Sharia Law, and their current leaders. Unfortunately, many Sunni
Muslims were dissuaded from voting by their leaders. Now they are upset because they have been "left out". Saddam was Sunni and those of his clan are displaced and angry, too, as well as armed to the teeth.
The Shiite Cleric, Al Sadr, has his own militia and he has been sending them to murder, bomb and cause mayhem in an attempt to start a civil war with the Sunnis. Early on, Al Sadr killed at least one more established Cleric and attempted to kill Al Sistani, who is an important leader to Shia's in Iran as well as Iraq.
Due to the varied ethnic groups with histories of hatred, this storm of violence has been unleashed after building for a generation under Saddam. Add to that a culture accostumed to tyrants and would be tyrants willing to do anything to gain power, and you have the current conditions in Iraq.
And, I've only left out the Kurds, who live in the north and want their own autonomy. All the other groups want to kill every last Kurd. The Turks would overrun the border tonight and begin the slaugher if they thought they could get away with it.
Lebanon, Syria, Iran and Afganistan are mixes of ethnic groups which mix like oil and water.
These hatreds which have built over generations are not something that Europeans and North Americans can identify with, but we will have to deal with them on their turf or ours.

This seems to depend heavily on whom you ask, and when.
There is a Civil War.
There are terrorist elements.
Which is bigger? From what I have read, I would have to say Civil War.
Best book I have read on this is Fiasco by Thomas Ricks . If you want a waltz through history of the MiddleEast try Efraim Halevy, I have forgotten the title but it was published this year.
This country is in Crisis and Id like to think those who actually care could take the time to read up.
And understand how precious a thing .........is the Right to Vote. It is a big responsibility. If you are not able to commit to doing this in an informed manner, than do the rest of us a service and stay the hell home.

Insurgents are more like mercenaries they are from many countries fighting who they are told to fight and where. They move to where the fighting is. Also they don't really care what happens to Iraq. The Iraqis fighting in their civil war are fighting for their political party/religious beliefts and territory.

Iraqis in Iraq are the son of the soil and are eligible for fight it but not those outside Muslim mercinaries (now all of a sudden appear in Iraq) who fight in groups for certain organizations on behalf of Islam and Iraqis for freedom due to any reason! So they are identified as infiltered "Islamic terrorists"!

One wants Sadam Husein back in power, the other doesn't. One wants a dictatorship, the other doesn't. One has US support, the other doesn't.
