Mononucleosis, often referred to as "mono," is a very common viral illness. About 90% of people over 35 have been infected with it, probably during early childhood, and have antibodies to the virus in their blood.

When mono strikes young children, the illness is usually so mild that it passes as a common cold or the fluflu. When it occurs during adolescence or adulthood, however, the disease can be much more serious.

Mono comes on gradually. It begins with flu-like symptoms -- fever, headache and a general malaise and lethargy. After a few days, the lymph glands begin to swell, although this symptom is not noticeable in everyone. Swollen glands in the back of the neck are especially typical of mono. Most people develop a sore throatsore throat, which can be very severe, with inflamed tonsils. A fever -- usually no higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit -- also can develop and may last up to three weeks.

Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, named after the two British researchers who first identified it in 1964, although the disease itself had been recognized many years earlier. A common member of the herpesherpes family of viruses, Epstein-Barr is spread primarily through the exchange of saliva, which is why mono is sometimes known as the "kissing disease." However, coughing or other contact with infected saliva can also pass it from one person to another.

NO they must have an energetic contamination if you would like to trap it, there are 2 varieties of mono, one may be very severe and so contagious that you're installed isolation ward at clinic in the event you agreement it. the opposite sort is extra traditional and may also be stuck via kissing, sharing beverages and many others. ( that's why it's referred to as the kissing sickness). It makes you exhausted and takes approximately a month to get better. All you do is sleep and believe terrible. No a laugh.

Mononucleosis is a respiratory virus that affects the blood cells and the salivary glands (the glands responsible for producing saliva). Even though anyone can get mononucleosis, most people who get the illness are between the ages of 15 and 25. Mono can keep you out of commission for weeks or even months.

Does mono have any complications?
Sometimes. The main serious concern with mono is that the spleen will enlarge and even rupture (tear open). The spleen is like a large gland. It's located in the upper part of your abdomen on the left side. It helps filter your blood.

Although a ruptured spleen is rare in people with mono, it's wise to be aware of the signs and call your doctor right away if you notice any of them. Signs of a ruptured spleen include pain in the left upper part of your abdomen (under the left chest), feeling lightheaded, feeling like your heart is beating fast and hard, bleeding more easily than usual and having trouble breathing.

Interesting tidbit...mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr virus) is NOT characterized by an overproduction of monocytes as once thought (hence the name mono.) It is actually an overproduction of lymphocytes that were originally misidentified as monocytes.

Mono is most frequently transmitted through hand-shaking. Mono usually lasts four to six weeks. Complete bed rest is the treatment used.

Mononulcleosis is also known as glandular fever. This is probably because if causes all your glands to swell - under your arms, under your chin, groin, and in your abdoment. It also causes a high fever and sore throat. You need a blood test to diagnose it accurately however, and even then results can be inconclusive.

It is called the kissing disease because it often strikes people in their late teens/early twenties and can be spread by saliva contact (when you kiss).
