I'm interested in making my own beer, but what I'd like to know is it possible to make a sweet-tasting beer if you add extra sugar to the mixture while keeping the time for fermentation the same? If not, what's another way to sweeten the taste of beer?

I'm not real knowledgable about making beer, but some of my favorite beers have fruit flavors added to them. You get an a slight fruit taste and a little sweetness, but mainly a nice fruit aroma. The fruit beers I enjoyed the most were ones flavored with apricot, raspberry, blueberry, or cranberry. If you need any help sampling experimental batches, let me know.

There are certainly a lot of wild answers being given here.

Sweet beers can be made a number of different ways, most of which depends on what style of beer you are attempting to make.

Adjustments can be made by:

1. Increasing malt content (this will also increase the alcohol by volume).
2. Using a yeast that has a lower attenuation (get a yeast recommendation from your local home-brew supplier).
3. Adding lactose (best if you are making a sweet stout).
4. Or (and not recommended) fermentus interuptus. This can be achieved with an addition of potassium sorbate added just before the end of fermentation. However this is hard to gage and would require that you keg your bee

+ OK, here are the facts about beer making. there is malt, water, hops and yeast as a minimum. Some people add other things.

At the cooking time (wurt for purists) or during the cooling phase there are certain things you can do that will effect your beer's taste and potency. More hops. more water? additional solids (in the form of sugars?) Irish moss? Oxygen? and other things that you don't need to know all the secrets of. I assume you will be making 5 gallon batches.

yeast can work on only soo much fuel before there is too much alcohol for it to produce more (in effect it drowns on it's own alcohol production) If you say added two pounds of brown sugar at the time of cooling, the yeast would produce it's maximum alcohol and leave the rest of the sugars in the beer creating a slightly sweet beer.

So that's my story and I am sticking to it.

You can, but it's a bit tricky...
Make your brew as you would normally.

Add a sweetening agent, such as sugar, fruit juice, honey or whatever you feel like to your beer. Now you must warm the brew up to 130f for 30 minutes or so to kill off any remaining yeast or it will simply ferment your sweet addition into good ol' alcohol and all will be wasted.

When bottling, be sure to keep things extra clean or you'll end up with exploding dry beer.

Good Luck!!!

I find that beer is much like tea, chala, or even coffee - you do have to work your way into it. I myself am a beer nut. I love different brews from diferent regions and there is alot of great stuff out there. Domestic stuff like Bud, Coors, Miller are pretty watery tasting and pale in comparison to microbrews or imports. I would maybe start with a pale ale or light lager from New Belgium, Goose Island, Amstel or something like that - but the best advice ever is to experment, try different types. There is a ton of it out there! Cheers!

Yeah, you can use fruit to make your beer. Alternatively you can add Beer Spykes to sweeten it. But it's sacriligious to me.

Beer is not intended to be sweet. Just add a slash of a Lambic.
