I've given this a lot of thought because I have a teenage niece who has a very bad temper...sometimes for no reason at all. She has had this problem since she was tiny. I believe this is a difficult problem. A flash of anger happens in an instant, sometimes with no warning. There is no thought process, You just react. So, I guess that a person with anger issues needs to take some kind of anger management course. My niece has been in counseling, but I don't see much improvement (probably partly because of her age).

Sit and write down where the anger comes from and then describe how much power you are going to allow anger to have to make you miserable. At this point I hope you can see that you have power over anger, not anger over you. The question is where do you get the power from to be in control.

READ THIS PLEASE
Stop & take about 10 seconds to think before you react! A few seconds of reasoning will go a long way! Think about how stupid you're gonna look getting mad about petty crap, that won't even matter later. Learn to pick your battles, can't get mad about everything! Do your heart, blood pressure & your own nervous system, a favor. Save all the anger & hostility for the enemy when we go to war! That's when we will need it!
Here is an exercise I have talked about before, it sounds really corny but it really works, I have anger issures myself! Take a deep breath, as deep as you can. But you have to breath it in through your nose, hold it 5 second, then breath out slowly through puckered (pursed) lips. It's the most effective way to get oxygen to your brain quick. Do about 5 to 10 times. It will calm you immediately. No body will see you if you turn away quietly and do this.
Remember it's important to breath in through your nose and out through pursed lips! Try it right now. We did this exercise in Detention Officer training.

Think happy thoughts and when you get angry figure out what triggered it and ask yourself if that is a good reason to let it get the best of you. you soon realize that you feel stupid for getting in bad moods. just think of it and ridiculous and know that it is nothing to have a cow about

distract yourself from the feeling. to me, i leave the area where i got angry. cool myself down. or when you feel the anger rising, stop, take long deep breaths. sound cliched perhaps. but it really helps. breathing is one technique that helps to maintain your emotions.
