The latest survey says that more than 150 languages are spoken in India, but there are only 15 major languages.Though Hindi is the national language of India, people speak English because of the British influence in India 57years ago. It is also because all people in India cannot speak all these languages, so they use the universal language, English.

A british legacy. This one language helps this massive nation 3000 km long and wide to communicate. There are 14 recognised languages in India and then uncountable no. of unrecognised ones. Obviously 800 million people can not speak the same language. It was more tough for the British to learn so many languages. So British wanted all of the Indians to speak English. And the legacy continued.

India has over hundred launguages including dialects, launguages which do not have any script of which 15 are major ones. English is spoken only by the literate and is genearlly a common medium for communication. Though Hindi is the officail language , there are areas where Hindi is not prevalent. India is a vast country with different culture people & many languages. Though Hindi is the national language of India, many parts of the country does not follow & familier with the same. English is widely spoken & understood language in India because once it was a Britisher colony. Also legal translation in English is seems to be easier than other languages.

But we Indians still love our mother tounge & we are proud to have so many classical languages.

The official national language of India is known as HINDI.
Apart from that India has many many languages of which 15 major ones have been taken as additional national languages.
English traders as 'EAST INDIA COMPANY" came to India around the year 1600 during the reign of Maughal emperor shah jehan (the one who built Taj mahal) The company obtained trading concessions and some land along the various coastal towns to Bring in and send their merchandise.
Later they obtained permission to build forts to protect themselves and recruit soldiers also. Slowly they got into politics in the south, east and western India. After the fall of Murals there was chaos in India .The company took full advantage of the chaos and captured many kingdoms to become rulers of India.
In order to rule they wanted English educated people for which they established many English schools. Since the English educated got lucrative jobs in the government all people started sending their children to English schools.
Gradually the English became official language for all government purposes. Lawyers, doctors, professors, engineers, and other technical persons were English educated.
It was subsequently a convenient weapon to unite India to fight the British and ultimately force them to leave India.
But the country had only English as link language for communication with out side world. So it continues even today.
