Let me try. One would be prevention of crops from immediate damage (thus stress, weakness, disruption of growth patterns), disruption of pest life cycle (if e.g. insect is in pre mating phase and it is eliminated, then the mating phase falls out), and ... Herbicides bring down the weeds, which means more nutrients, light, water are available to our plants and also the elimination of the diseases (that the weed might carry and transfer to the plants we grow).
