Talk about things that he likes this way he will open up and feel at ease. Then move on to other topics.

I would ask him about things that interest him. Find common hobbies or interest between the two of you. But be patient with him if he's shy. Eventually he'll come around and open up to you. As time passes you could share things about your friends, family, etc and perhaps he will too. Good luck.
P.S. Remember chances are there is a reason why he's shy. Perhaps he's been hurt in a past relationship or perhaps he's afraid of being hurt. So be kind and you will be rewarded.

Ask this: who, what where, when, why=sometimes.
you can ask all open ened questions to get full answers, don't ask yes/no questions.
Example: Tell me what you like most about.......you favorite hobbie?
No way can he answer this as a yes or no.
