Do they carry them into the buildings to fight fires? And how safe is that? Also do they give bursts of oxygen to the people they rescue?

Firemen do not carry oxygen tanks into a fire.

I think you are confusing the oxygen tanks they have on ambulances with the compressed air tanks that firemen wear on thier backs.

Compressed air = breathing air = the same as normal air
(this is what the firemen have)

Oxygen tanks = 100% oxygen = not the same as normal air
(this is not what is taken into a fire)

Also, for the record, Oxygen is NOT flammable, but oxygen is one of the three things that is typically needed to support combustion. So it is true that if you add pure oxygen to a fire, the fire will burn hotter and faster.

Firemen carry oxygen tanks into house and building fires where the smoke is concentrated, and there is no oxygen in the air. They are called scotts. They are not used in say a grass fire or outdoor fire, generally, because there is significant ventilation in most cases. Some of the larger outdoor fires that take place in the north like Colorado may use scotts because of their mass and the large amount of oxygen used up in the burning process. The process of wearing a scott is very safe. There are even alarms that go off when the tank is running low. There is also an alarm that sounds at a extremely loud decibel when the firefighter has not moved in a short amount of time, like 15 sec.

no, they do not. they wear masks to filter the air. victims recieve oxygen when they are more that 200 yards from the fire, generally in an ambulence.
