Okay I have three answers for this. The first one: "Deja Vu" literally in French, means "Already Viewed/Seen" becuase 'Vu' is the past parciple of voir the French verb for 'to see'. And Deja is some sort of adverb that i can't/won't explain here. But trust me, my French prof. got all high hat when he broke down the meaning of 'deja vu' (and FYI there's an accent in deja over the e, aigu or grave i dunno, sorry). The second attempt: If your a film fan, and The Matrix is fresh in your mind, then 'deja vu' obviously means the agents are on to your loctation. You'd do best to vacate asap or (rapidment, in French) becuase you'd better get ready for a fierce shoot out. Third attempt: Okay since I'm a Sherlock in training, i'd go as far to assume that you are not a native American speaker. I say American, not English, 'cause you might very well know English and not have the darndest idea what 'deja vu' meant, unless, you grew up in the culture. That being said, 'deja vu', in a purely scientific manner, means a signal has been given that at any moment the 4 Horsemen will complete their tasks and God will come from his seat on High to deliver his judgement. We Americans simply hold our breath until the next 'deja vu' occurs; Of course this is only what 'deja vu' means if you don't already know. Us Americans know better. Hehe. laugh with me!

What is Deja Vu (vous)?
Your brain, as you know, is a computer. Like a computer, you have input (eyes,nose,ears,touch,etc.). The data is processed and stored, and later recalled. The processing and storage in a computer is done by a CPU and memory chip respectively.
In the brain, the memory is created by nerve cells forming a pattern with adjacent cells and a synapse is the electrical charge that stores and recalls the "memory" . Deja vous is a short circuit. What happens is memory is recalled SIMULTANEOUSLY with the input without going through the "processor" time delay.

It means that you are having the feeling that this experience happened before. Like if you are walking down the street and everything looks familiar like you have been there before, but never really were.
dé·jà vu (dzhä v) KEY NOUN:
Psychology The illusion of having already experienced something actually being experienced for the first time.
An impression of having seen or experienced something before: Old-timers watched the stock-market crash with a distinct sense of déjà vu.
Dull familiarity; monotony: the déjà vu of the tabloid headlines.

Its when you experience a feeling of having experienced before something. Its not exactly known what it is, but a dr told me it was the brain playing tricks - making you think you`ve been in that moment before.
Your friends may be expereincing de ja vu, or using the saying as a way of meaning they`ve are familar with a present situation.

Deja vu is a French term [as are the terms I surrender and I give up]
It means that you've experienced some given situation, and are experiencing it again.
