My soon to be sister in law had a baby girl and I want to buy her a gift. She is Japanese and had the baby there so I want to be practical for the baby but give something that shows that I care and am thoughtful about the cultural differences in our family. Any suggestions would be helpful!

I think it's great that you're so thoughtful, but since you aren't Japanese and don't know much about their culture, it's not necessary to get a traditional Japanese gift. Since the baby was born in Japan, I'm sure it already received plenty of traditional gifts. Give something practical and useful and something that will really be appreciated: Diapers. Another thoughtful gift: A nice note to your sister-in-law-to-be telling her that you appreciate her and are excited to have her and the new baby as part of your family.

A little Japanese style lunch box and some baby spoons, forks and chopstick (they should sell them in Japanese stores). It'll come in use when the baby is older. People from Asia likes practical gifts (as opposed to ornaments and stuffed toys).

i personally don't think it matters if she's japanese or not. i mean whatever you give to her im sure she'll like. just give her something that will fit for the age and also something different, fun, and useful. give her something that the family will remember it's from you. make it a personal gift like a photo album or a picture frame of the family.

How about Gemboree's clothes? Baby's (and kid's) clothes in the U.S. are a little bit different from those in Japan in terms of color and design. Also, we don't have Gemboree in Japan. I think Gemboree's clothes surely represent America, and your future sister in law will like them.
