The shyness is not unusual. Maine Coons are known to be a bit shy around strangers, a bit hesitant. They like to take their time to warm to someone new, and sometimes if strangers fuss over them too much, they just prefer to go away. It doesn't mean that they are upset or anti-social.

I had a MC, and she was an extremely gentle cat, very sweet and beautiful, but she was also very cautious of new people. It could be due to the cat's loyalty to you.

I am attaching a couple of links with some information about MCs for you.

That actually is normal cat behavior. Most cats don't like unfamiliar people and will disappear when company comes. I may have 6 cats driving me crazy for attention, but let someone else come to the house and one cat is all they will see! The others will be in hiding, and one especially clever cat has figured out she can open the cabinet door under the kitchen sink and sneak in behind the drawers to a spot where she can hear everything going on in the living room but nobody knows she is there. Thus she hides and listens to my guests at the same time.

The other cats hide in the usual favorite hiding places of most cats, as far under a bed as they can get.

I've had many cats, handled many cats, of all breeds, and this is a basic common trait of most cats, to hide from strangers.

I had a MC that adopted me when I went to the humane society. I was looking for a kitten and did not even really look at her as she was much older. as I walked by her cage the second time, she reached out and grabbed me, caught my attention and she was SO beautiful I asked the attendant to let me hold her. When I took Taj out of the kennel she rubbed all over me and purred up a storm. The attendant told me this was surprised because she had never seen her at the front of her cage when others were around.

I took Taj home and spent the next week with her alone. We got to know each other and figure out each other's quirks. Then my 20 year old son came over to visit and she hid under the bed. Would not come out and even after he left, she avoided the sofa where he had been sitting. She never would warm up to people if they were wanting to pay attention to her. She would come out to "visit" if she thought she was being ignored though.

I have the same problem with my Siamese cats. I think that since my son had moved to his own apartment and had no friends over to my house, that my kittens did not get used to people around. Before my two cats a Persian and a Siamese had kids around and were used to the noises and movement. When they got old and died, I waited awhile before I got a cat. After my son left, I got two Siamese cats and no one was around but me. When other people arrive, they hide under my bed. I think it is not the breed, but the atmosphere they get used to. Hope this helps.

I have 4 cats and 3 of them will hide from strangers, just because they are cats.
