is a placebo? Can a doctor do this legally? Would a doctor even do this?

When I was a teenager a friend of mine who worked at the pharmacy where I got refills, told me not to bother, the meds were placebos. I stopped taking the meds. I later found out she was right.
Another time, years later I asked a doctor if he were giving me placebos, and he said "Oh no, I could get in trouble for doing that." and yet I hear about all these tests where they give half the patients a placebo. If you trust your pharmacist you could ask them, or better yet look up the name on your pill bottle in a book listing meds and their side effects. At goodwill I have seen pharmacy books, and nursing books etc. Also, you could do an online search for the name of your medication. Lastly ask your physician. If you don't trust your doctor to not be giving you a placebo maybe you should find one you can trust more. I think there is a good case for Ethics in this placebo stuff. If I were suffering from a serious, especially a life-threatening disease and I were given a placebo and told that it was "the real thing" and later had serious health consequences, I definitely think I would have grounds for a suit against the doctor, health facility etc. Watch out if they give you a paper to sign saying that you are willing to undergo new, experimental or unproven medication as a part of therapy, because I think this is how they can legally give you placebos. However there are new, experimental drug therapies that are unproven as such, and are truly bonafide and heal you if they don't kill ya first. There are new drugs that do save people's lives. Your question is such a good one. I wish I had access to a medical lawyer. There are a lot of RN's on Answers, maybe one of them will answer your question. You could just phone a local law office and ask them outright if it's legal to prescribe placebos. The attorney yoiu call might hope he has a case and tell you the answer. Online, you might try the Search engine that used to be called "Ask Jeeves" which is now called "Ask" search engine, which takes written out questions and searchers for the answer. Just type in your question like we do here on Answers." Is it lawful to give placebos tp patients?"" How do I know my medication is not a placebo?" "What are the names of some commonly prescribed placebos?" All; the tricky things that Medicine has done to unsuspecting patients in the name of "science". Good for you for questioning your rights as a consumer and making sure you get the proper medical care. I wish you well!

Only in a test group which you have to volunteer for. Why don't you call the American Doctor Association and ask? I agree with the person about trust. I never go to a doctor I wouldn't recommend to someone else.

put the name into wikipedia.com and see exactly what it is. if that doesnt work you can put the scientific name into chemfinder.com and that should tell you everything you ever needed to know about it. good luck. it should say so on your sheet from the pharmistist though. consult your doctor and ask him why he gave you sugar pills.
