I'm still taking penicillin for strep throat...I went out of town for 2 days and forgot my penicillin but am taking it again....Did those 2 days allow the infection to get back in and will taking the penicillin again work against it?

Antibiotics are given in passive dosages. They must be completed as prescribed in order to do it's job. A steady flow of the medication is taken in grams in order to work properly. Missed dosages can be doubled a time or two. Most antibiotics are taken every 4 to 6 hours to insure it's effect. But the effect and over-all cure and/or comfort can be compromised if the level of antibiotic is not maintained.

And NO, it will not work against the strep, but it may re-occur on a less severe level.

Complete the prescription as called for. Ask for a re-fill if the symptoms have not subsided one week after you finish the original prescription. Then stick to the dose.

Because your throat has started to hurt again, you should call your doctor and let him/her know. It is possible that you may need a different antibiotic; it is possible that your body did not respond to the penicillin. In case you don't know, strep is highly contagious and is dangerous if not treated.

I'm no doctor but interrupting the taking of the medication may set you back but the treatment may still be successful. I'd call your doctor and ask him but if that isn't possible when you're out of medicine have your throat looked at again.

Anitbiotics typically have a long half-life, meaning there is some left in your blood even after you stop taking them.

You should continue taking your pills until the perscription is finished, and contact your doctor to see if you need to add on a few days to make up for it.

it depends on type and severity of infections...

if infection is severe - won't work as bacteria would have grown resistant to the drug...
