The doctor put me on extra strength vicodin and morphine.I have taken them for at least 8 years.I know I'm addicted because when I don't have them I have withdrawals.I don't abuse them though so is this really dangerous? I really need them and probably always will so what difference does it make?

I think as long as you are taking the meds as prescribed and not abusing them it is ok. If it gets to the point that you are taking more than your dr ordered or lying about your pain to get more meds there is a problem. If you are concerned about being addicted talk to your dr about it. as long as you are using the meds correctly don't worry. do what your dr says.

Keep taking your prescribed medicine. With this said you need to ask your doctor of the root cause of your problem. Unfortunately doctors prescribe to symptoms ie...pain, high blood pressure, restless leg syndrome, and can't take the time with each patient to figure out what is happening physiologically to cause this pain. However, your doctor can be your greatest source for information that can help reduce the amount of medication needed if they are well read on the benefits of certain nutrients you are lacking. They can research these in their own journals and get you the help you need, but you need to be proactive and ask many direct and to the point questions. Example, if a patient has restless leg syndrome a doctor generally prescribes a drug for it because it will benefit the problem. Unfortunatley you have risk of side effects. Most people do not need the drugs however! The root problem is caused primarily by lack of nutrients in our daily diets, in this case it is magnesium and a few others that the doctor could look up and tell you. Unfortunately they do not have the time, money or resources for that so they prescribe the drug, get a co-pay out of you and treat the side effect with some other drug when it rears its nasty head.

Bottom line talk to your doctor and see if they can do a little extra for you!

I haven't heard anyone defend him on this basis, not even Rush himself who admitted that he was addicted to prescription pain medication. Opiates are opiates whether it's heroin, opium, oxycontin or whatever. He admitted that he was an addict and then checked himself into a treatment center. There was never any evidence that he obtained pills on the street. There was a housekeeper that claimed he did and sold her story to a tabloid. The Palm Beach County State Attorney may have had Rush on doctor shopping but that wasn't proven. Who are you talking about ? Even if Rush was street doping as you allege, what is your greater point ? Do you think that something besides the free market should decide who is on the radio ?

As long as they are medically necessary and your pain is well controlled don't concern yourself with addiction. Odd I know.

My mom suffered staggering pain which required her to eventually move to Diliudid, even stronger than Morphine when administered via an Omar device implanted in her brain. She was on oral Diliudid for a few of years first (300 pills @ 4mg each per month) and she voiced her concerned to me that she didn't want to get addicted. And she knew she was terminal.

I hope your situation is not terminal. My point is to maintain the pain and have a life. If the time comes to get off the medication, I imagine your MD will have it reduced over time until you no longer have that "needy" feeling.

Good Luck......
