Still reeling from an experience with Yahoo's Instant Messager ... Met a guy on MySpace and was invited to chat thru IM. Started out nice enough ... but in a little over a week, things started to get strange! I found myself getting emotionally pulled into the relationship, but kept a steady online distance. Fortunately I did not give him any sensitive financial info when he said he needed my "help".

I'd like to know how to avoid this again ... that was brutal!

Don't do it again
Unfortunately you are always going to be dealing with these type of things with online dating. I mean think about it, people have tendencies to mask their true selves in person - how much more do you think they can conceal and manipulate behind a computer screen?
You just need to be very protective of your safety and emotions. Dating is hard enough in real life, without all the other aspects of being "online". I have been there and there is one thing I can tell you. No matter how much you think you like a person, how well you get along online and on the phone - it is always diff than in person. Other factors start to come into play. (This is comming from someone that communicated with the same man for 2 1/2 yrs before we finally met in person)
Why don't you try to just meet friends online and get into a local church or charity and try to meet some nice men? Leave the online guys alone...too much in the closet for me, anyways.
Sorry you had to go through that. Better luck with your new endeavors

You just have to be weary about everyone and everything. I take it you really weren't looking for online dating but it just sort of happened right? Then again, a week and you were already getting the funny feeling in your belly for this guy? Take it easy and really don't expect anything more than a friendship, at best. I met a great guy the same way you did, except for the weird stuff, and we've been talking for about 6 mos. We soon will get together and take it from there. Good things happen when you least expect them. Cheer up! You have no time to be feeling sad.

ohh man, that must be so heartbreaking. There is a group on yahoo called romancescams that usually support eachother since many have gone through the same situation. You should join and say who it was that was scamming. I hope you feel better!
