My sister, for reasons only known to her, DOES NOT get along with her in-laws. I personally have nothing against them. Anyways, every holiday her in-laws invite me to dinner. But I never go because my sister refuses to go and I don't feel right leaving her alone since her husband and the kids do attend the dinners. What can I say is my reason for NOT being able to attend?

say that u feel bad leaving ur sister alone and say hopefully next year we'll both attend. try to talk to ur sister to make an effort to go, at least for her kids sake, it's gonna suck for them thinking that their mother is all by herself. they might hate her for it once they grow up. good luck

If it's a holiday occasion, simply say that you have a previous obligation to YOUR family. They can't be hurt by that, and you're not putting yourself in the middle of the situation between them and your sister. You're respectfully declining their invitation.

just tell them thank-you very much for the invitation, but you have prior plans with family.
