DVD media has atleast 7 times the capacity of CD media. For example a typical blank CD can hold 700 MB of data, a blank DVD can store 4.7 GB of data.
DVD technology writes in smaller 'pits' (non-reflective holes) to the disc than CD technology. Smaller pits mean that the drive's laser must produce a smaller spot.
Additionally, DVD tracks are closer together, allowing more tracks per disc. These narrow tracks require special lasers for reading and writing — which can't read CD-ROMs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, or audio CDs.
Most drive makers have solved this problem by putting two lasers in their drives: One for DVDs, the other for CDs.

A CD will hold up to 700 Mb of data. This data can be CD audio, mp3 files, or any other files copied from your computer. A DVD single layer disk can hold about 4.8 Gb of data, including everything I mentioned a CD can hold. A Dual Layer DVD can hold about 9.6 Gb of data, which includes a full length feature movie.
