The Rat Terrier is a hunter. The cat was my dad's and needs a home. I am hoping they will get used to each other but I am afraid because of the Rat's breed and the Cat's hunting nature that they will end up seriously hurting one another. We tried the dog on a leash and then let him go. The cat is now hiding and the dog is going crazy sniffing trying to find her. It is almost bed time and I am afraid to sleep if they get at each other in the night. I do not have areas where I can close doors and keep them in separate rooms.

i highly doubt that they would actually kill each other, especially if this cat has claws! cats are good at defending themselves and won't readily attack dogs unless dogs attack them first, and even then it's usually just defensive.

just try and keep them in separate rooms so that your dog will calm down and you can get some sleep! do you have a fenced in area with a little shelter so the dog can sleep outside at night? or a friend who might keep the cat or dog overnight?

If you've control over the dog, try to keep the stomach of the dog full and train it to make friendship with the cat. It can be made possible, but requires a lot of patience and understanding their moods and responses.
