actually there is so many types of polluitng the planet sometimes the reason is us.. some of this are common to us

1.industrial factories(smoke)
2cars (smoke) that leads to carbon monoxide then causes it death

Then if you combine carbon monoxide and water it can cause acid rain.

Acid rain is a widespread term used to describe all forms of acid precipitation (rain, snow, hail, fog, etc.). Atmospheric pollutants, particularly oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, can cause precipitation to become more acidic when converted to sulphuric and nitric acids, hence the term acid rain. Acid deposition, acid rain and acid precipitation all relate to the chemistry of air pollution and moisture in the atmosphere. Scientists generally use the term acid deposition but all three terms relate to the same issue

Just to add a small note to previous answers. Pollution is also natural due to the volcanic eruptions, land slides (that pollute the water streams), etc. Of course here we speak about the pollution with natural materials. How do we pollute? With by products of our human activities, when the Earth cannot carry on the huge amounts of the garbage any more. It's like having a glass of pure water, you add half a tea spoon of salt, and you can still drink it, you add a full spoon or two of salt, and here you go, water is too 'polluted' to drink it. It is about the amounts piling up all over the world and these materials often go uncared, thus releasing its toxic substances to the water, soil, atmosphere. There is of course a lot more, such as combustion gasses, industrial emissions to the air and water, etc. And last but not least, water is alive organism, it carries substances on the long distances, which is usually ignored, but the pollution spreads this way very effectively.
