Black licorice? Devil's road tar, or the best candy ever?

I have always LOVED black licorice. I think it comes from a childhood ritual of taking Father John's tonic, which was licorice flavored and from visiting my paternal grandmother, who always had nasty candies in her candy dish. Old fashioned stuff like black licorice drops and horehound drops. Smith Brothers had a cough drop when I was a kid. It was about the only cough drop you could buy, and it was black licorice. I'll take black licorice over strawberry licorice any day. That stuff tastes like wax lips!

Quality black licorice is one of the greatest candy ever. It must be soft and chewy and full of flavor. Leaf pipes from England are good as are Allsorts if they are fresh.

The stale Twistler's that we get in the states are an abomination to the black licorice family. Please do not judge licorice by that standard.

It's a tie in my mind as to name licorice or ginger as the best flavor for sweets. The both have a long history and both are helpful in stomach complaints. I might have to give ginger a thumbs up over licorice only because it does not stain the mouth like true licorice does.

If licorice is the devil's tar then ginger is the angel's breath. They both have their place.

Please don't judge licorice by the stale twisted roots sold as Twistler's in the states. They truly are the root of all nastiness.

I am not a very big fan of licorice. Although it does help if you have low blood pressure.

I love black licorice! I like the flavor that it leaves in my mouth (anise?) and the chewiness makes me feel like I'm really eating something.

And, I like the benefits it brings to me after it's digested.

I think it is terrible!!! Personally I enjoy the strawberry or cherry kind...but the black stuff is terrible.
