Asalaamu alaikum. I'm a convert and i go to a private christian school. The uniform skirt is too short. I feel really embarrassed to bring up this problem with anyone at the mosque. Well I decided to come to some compromise even if i'm not ready to wear hijab yet- i got permission from an authority figure to wear high socks. But my school principal (who has had it in for me for 6 years) today said that permission is denied, even for religion. I can understand that i signed a contract about the uniform policy, but it's not like i have bad intentions or anything. So my question is what should i do about it? I didn't want to make a big deal out of it since it is an all-girls school and seniors only wear the uniform one day a week. I also have a bad history at this school, and they have threatened to kick me out a number of times. Now that i'm getting good grades, i don't want to blow it. I also feel that getting kicked out is no way to respect my parents who work hard to send me there.

I have empatrhy for your situation. We all screw up sometime in our lives. And I have no solutions.

Do you think if you wrote a letter of apology to the principal and said you were truly sorry for your past screwups that may clear some of the negative air that exists between you two?

I think the bible recommends that you make or buy a gift for the principle that would go a long way to helping the situation you are in. Then you wouldn't have any regrets when you graduate. Do it from the heart and it may work. You could also pray about it and ask for maybe better wisdom than I am giving

However putting it in the modern venacular you finally found your groove.

Haughtiness and arrogance are bad traits to see in christians or anyone who carry grudges. I hope you don't find yourself doing that. Providing forgiveness is the best answer for everyone concerned.

I am not muslim, but my comments are not rude, so I think I'm allowed to answer your question:

Although I think we should all accept each other's religious preferences, the fact is that you go to a private, CHRISTIAN school, and they are not obligated to let you do whatever your religion tells you to.

Depending on what branch of Christianity it is, the sect may be more/less tolerant of other religions. If the school is part of a tolerant sect, then you may be able to tell the principal something like this:
"Part of this sect of Christianity is that you must respect other religions. My religions dictates that I cannot wear such a short skirt. If you do not let me follow my religion and wear a longer skirt, you are disrespecting my religion, so you are being a bad Christian".

If the school's sect does NOT enforce respect of other religions, then you're out of luck. After all, it IS a Christian school, and they are not obligated to enforce any other religion than Christianity (even though I personally, don't agree with this-- I am not a Christian :o) )

Good luck to you!!

Salaam Doe-eyed...Are you saying that the principal has the authority to impose even the length of skirts and prevent you from wearing high socks? I mean is the skirt supposed to be so long above the knee in the contract you signed? Also, I don't think your principal would find legal or biblical support for her position. I wonder if you have the support of your parents, because they could approach the principal to allow you to wear your uniform in more modest lengths. It delights my heart when a young person tries to accommodate God's guidance in his or her life. May Allah always bless you, and guide and protect you.

asalamwalaikum sister,

i had a similar problem after i converted, but i wont go into detail. the first thing you need to do is speak with your parents. let them know why you dont want to wear a short skirt and allow them to decide where you should go further on this. b/ you don't want to upset them and don't want to sacrifice your grades. make your decision based on their guidance.

** when i first converted someone told me that you have sort of a grace period. it will take a while for you to fully adopt the principles of Islam so just take it one step at a time.

asalamwalaikum new sister

Wa'allaikummussallaam Warrah matullah wa Barraqatuh..

I remember a saying of a Ustadz:

"Follow the trend but do not forget your GOD!"

Does it mean that we as Muslims have to wear hijab? I believe not, in the Al-Qur'an, stated that we have to cover our "Aurat" or "Aurah" or in the opinion of current modernization is the area that create the "DESIRE" for the opposed sex to harass you.

In many Muslim countries, I will take one example which is Indonesia as "The Biggest Muslim Population Country in the World", Yes 15-20% of the people wears hijab, but most people does not wear the hijab and many of them are wearing short skirts...

To cut it short, do not worry of what uniform you are wearing, its your heart and your believe that counts.

Again, if you have good grades, your parents are working hard to send you there, do not worry of small uniform thing.

Allah is Rahmaan...Rohiim...

I hope this helps and gives you the strength to graduate.

Wassallamu'allaikum Warrah matullah wa Barraqatuh
