Bible prophecy teaches that, after Christ returns, he will set up a theocracy on earth called the Millennium. The saved among us will reign with him those thousand years, and beyond in the new heaven and the new earth.

He was quoting from psalms 37:9,10,11
for evildoers shall be cut off but those that wait upon the lord, they shall inherit the earth. for yet a little while and the wicked shall not be yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. KJV
Psalms 37:29The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell there in forever.

In the book of Revelation, there is a 1000 year period where the saints rule under Christ. They "inherit" because it is not of their doing.
In the book of living, the "inherit" also comes from God and involves a greater and greater eye opening awareness of God's wonders, grace, and love in all of creation.

if you are referring to the eight beatitudes:
it is blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.
the inherit the earth part referrs to the kingdom of God.
