You never said what kind of motor for the 2001
Lots of stuff can cause lean codes (p0171+P0174) but usually on the v-8s it was a leaking PCV hose in the back of the intake.. It's the hose that connects the PCV to the intake, the elbow degrades and lean codes will come right before the vehicle running like crap.
The v-6s had upper intake o-rings and bolts (with o-rings on them) leaking air on first start causing a lean code on first start up.
Both had TSBs issued due to it, and Ford Parts departments are all pretty much familair with them now (considering the f-150 is the best selling truck)
Maf can cause it, but needs a scanner to accurately diagnose a bad MAF (unless you wanna spend $300 to guess)
EGR won't almost never cause a lean code without other symptoms.... DPFE sensors will cause driveability problems more than a EGR
Hope this helps

i own a repair shop, and something as small as a dirty air filter will cause it to run lean, i got one now working on it ,and its running lean also,on it i found a bad oxygen sensor ,but it didn't leave a code for it,and the sensor is damaged, why it didn't show it, i don't know, but i did replace it,and now its running good, your might be doing a similar thing ,,because the mass ,and the 0-2 sensor both help determine the mixture of fuel it gets, you can take it by any auto zone store and they will scan it free of charge for you ,and maybe it will show up on yours, good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

My 96 Cougar gives the lean signal. I turn off the lite add a bottle of injector cleaner to the tank ( $ 0.88 at Wal Mart ) and it doesn't come on for a couple of months. Then I repeat.

Is it running lean or is it just telling you it is? It could be just a bad sensor.

Most of the time I find that when both banks are running lean, you have a vacuum leak.

How many miles. Could be your Injectors getting clogged or low fuel pressure possible filter clog. MAS could go bad.

A bad EGR valve would do it. Also check the O2 sensor.

i hear the symptoms of a vacuum leak. the hard part is finding it. look at the vacuum diagram for the pcv valve location, it should give you a pretty close map of the engine bay to find that thing.
