Anything you do to a joint, whether it's habitual or sudden, can change the way the joint operates.
There may be something about the structure of your leg that makes you vulnerable to the current problem AND to the sprain (falling down the stairs and doing the same thing to the opposite leg might NOT have led to the same injury). Or, using the sprained leg might have caused some protective reactions in the muscles near to the injury, which have become habitual and now cause the pain you feel.
A physiotherapist can test your leg to find out what the source of the problem is, and will also be able to give you some exercises to either fix the problem or reduce its effects.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

I had a similar experience, when I sprained my ankle whilst abroad...this was 3 years ago. I had treatment abroad, but when I returned to the UK, I never bothered to look into the ankle, thinking that it would naturally heal..Occasionally, if I walk on an uneven pavement, the ankle sometimes bends slightly, almost spraining again. What you might need to do , is to wear a support, until that part strengthens, and perhaps go see a doctor.
Good luck..

Hi well first off all when you had a sprain 4 yrs ago did you have alot off swelling ? Im asking as you may off had a fracture. When you have alot off swelling fractures dont always show up on the x-ray,not until alot off the swelling has gone down, you shoud off had another x-ray awk to 10 days later to confirm you did or dint have a fracture.Pain now is not normal especiall if its alot, yes you may get a touch off arthitas now as the ligamament and muscles have been stretched.I recommend you go bck to your gp,he will examine you,he should send you for another x-ray and may thn refer you to the orthopaedic team in you local hospital.Good Luck

I think you should have it checked out because you could have torn a ligament. Believe me i fell two weeks ago and sprained it and found out a week later that i tore a ligament in my ankle

Yes. I've injured both my ankles and on both occasions ended up on crutches. That was over 6 years ago and now and again one of my ankles will give way when I'm walking or if I knock it, it bruises badly. I can't sit in certain positions either because it irritates and hurts them.

i think you should see someone about it. you may have hurt something in your ankle when you sprained it and your doctor probably overlooked it. Thankfully it doesn't happen too often but still...

You may have a chronic injury which has never healed and you are reinjuring soft tissue and/or ligaments and tendons. It would be wise to see your doctor. It would be good if you're having pain and swelling when you are seen.
