Ok 2 commandments confuse me 1. You shall have no gods before me. 2.You shall not make yourself into a god. Isnt it the same because worshiping yourself and others worshiping you would disobey both. so are those commandments the same making it 9 commandments or am i completely wrong and they have nothing to do with each other?

You shall not make yourself a God isn't a commandment.

You shall have no other Gods before me.
Not stuff, idols, people, time, family, cars, ect. Can be a god that we put before the Lord God.

hope i helped.

You are beautiful. This is exactly why Paul wrote that disobeying 1 law is the same as disobeying all the all the laws. Carry out your insightful reasoning through all the 10C.
A good explanation of the difference can be found in Luther's Small Catechism.
Keep up the great theology.

Some good answers already. Just two additional thoughts:

Aren't the 10 commandments replaced by two other commandments - something about loving God and your neighbour?

Don't the latter two commandments make legalism and performance-based religions to be obsolete (obsolete in the sense that these religions are still valid choices but not necessarily defining love in these two dimensions) ?

The second is "you shall not make unto yourself an idol." In other words, you should not make graven images and worship them as gods. This is called idolatry.

But your question is valid. That is why some divide the commandments differently.

Well You shall not worship any other Gods other than the one true God. Simple to understand. You shall not make graven images. Simple do not worship things as trees, animals, do not make images of God to worship. Like taking a picture of God and worshipping it. or taking a ceramic figurine of God and worshipping it. or talking a buddah figure and worshipping it. Worship the one true God and only him. never make any thing and worship it. Although we tend to worship money or material things like cars, the music we listen to even the Enternet. Scarey but we do.

Having "no gods before me" i believe refers to those things which people put before God in importance in their lives such as money or fame. The other is not about making yourself a god but making images (statues for example) and worshipping them.

Don't worship anything else but God and don't think so highly of yourself that you would want others to worship you.

The old Commandments expired along with all the old law when the new covenant was established by Christ.

The revised new covenant Commandments, which were readopted and readapted by the Church don't suffer from these problems.

The second one is a misquote. Don't make idols is what that verse is saying.

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10
