Lions are not very good at climbing trees and of all the animal shows I watch I have never seen a cheetah do it. Leopards are the only large and heavy cats that climb trees. So it has something to do with the weight of the animal. Domestic dogs don't have much need to climb a tree. Most of them feel they can defend themselves on the ground (even little ones). Domestic cats on the other hand are naturally wary of danger and feel safer up a tree.

Dogs, and related animals, have non-retractible claws and paws that have evolved to optimize running on relatively flat areas. Although a cat, a Cheetah's entire body, including its semi-retractable claws, also has evolved strictly for running. Cheetahs run to catch prey and to escape lions and hyenas. The largest cats, tigers and lions, could and sometimes do climb up trees for a limited distance. But, their weight and not-very-suitable-for-climbing hind paws and ankles make climbing difficult. Cat's claws, except for the Cheetah, are primarily for catching and holding pray. Since many cats, as predators, are at or near the top of the food chain in their environment, fleeing up trees is not necessary. Leopards, who are not at the top of the food chain, have evolved into the best tree climber in the cat family.
