If he is in the USA and on

then he's dead. If he is not on it he may still be dead, just not on it. Click on "Advanced Search" and fill in as much as you know.
I don't know what they use in Australia or the UK.

A hospital will not give you medical records, even for a fee. Medical records are confidential, even for deceased people. The county clerk where you dad died should have his death certificate on file and that you can get a copy of for a fee.

Well go to the town hall death records or where ever he died they'll have some answers 4 you or ask who ever he was living with they might be able 2 answer them 4 U

As long as you know your full father's name there should be a death certificate that is the listed as the cause of death. However, if its and ongoing investigation. You will not get death certificate yet until it is over.
