She shouldn't be bred until the 'heat' following her second birthday, and she shouldn't have more then 3 litters in her lifetime..wait a year between each litter..

Lori.R .. is right on!

"Shih Tzu's in particular" doesn't really matter. All canines have similar heat cycles, all canines have very similar needs in breeding.

Asking such a basic question as to the optimum time to breed on an open board shows you have not done much homework when it comes to breeding dogs. Before even considering putting a stud to a female, please buy some books, talk with other breeders, especially the one you got your dog from, visit sites on the internet regarding breeding.

The answer to your question is such a simple one for any serious breeder that it is hard to believe. The only comparison I can make is someone coming on board and saying, "I just bought a car and the guy gave me some keys. What do I do with these keys?"

Can you understand the difficulty here? If you haven't a clue what to do with the keys, should you be driving a car? If you haven't a clue when the prime time for breeding is, should you be breeding? The answer is NO in both cases.

I am giving a site that lists some of the things that any responsible Shih Tzu breeder should be doing before they breed. This is just one of dozens of sites. There are thousands of sites regarding responsible dog breeding, in general. Hundreds of books at your library or local pet supply store.

Please educate yourself BEFORE you breed rather than have a few helpless, dependent pups who are relying on you and you don't know what to do.

We have two Shih Tzu-Bichon crosses, who just had puppies. Our female went into 'standing heat' at about 10 days after her first bleed, and in 4 days, our male had gotten to her six times. I suppose when you only get a chance twice a year you get it as much as you can. . .lol. It gave us 4 beautiful puppies!

The female will not let a male get to her until she is ready for breeding. If you don't own the male, it gets a bit trickier if you haven't counted the days since her first bleed. If you have, it's about 7 - 10 days after.

Oh, and a couple of other points. Number one, it's a good idea to know what you are getting into if you are planning to breed. You've taken the first step in asking this question, but there is so much more to know before you undertake this. Breeding is not always a fun job. Number two, how old is your dog? You should never breed her until she's had AT LEAST her second heat cycle. We didn't breed our female until her fifth. And don't breed them after about 4 or 5 years of age.

Please contact your breeder mentor about this question. She should be able to tell you. Or, talk to the people at the dog shows that you show your dog in. If you don't have a breeder mentor, and you don't show your dog, then you should not be breeding. Simply owning a pure bred dog does not mean she should be bred. Please visit the AKC site and look at their ruls for being a breeder along with the shih-tzu site and look at their code of ethics. Good luck to you.

you can breed her when she is in her 9th day of her heat cycle, or when she will accept the male. you can tell when she will be ready is when she will let the male in. when you do breed her you want to do it 3 times to be sure but give her a day of rest in between. so breed herevery other day for 3 days. good luck.

Ok Never breed on the 1st heat.....Then when you do breed her do it every other year for 3 litters. Never breed them back to back heats.

If you don't know, then don't do it.
Read and educate your self before you breed. You may find that it isn't worth the trouble and money.

Don't breed your dog, honey. There are enough dogs already. Purebreds or muts, it makes not difference. Hundreds of thousands of dogs are destroyed in this nation because there are not enough homes for them.... call your pound -- ask how many they put down every week,,,,,, ask!!!! Don't breed you dog, sweetie.
