i plan on sellin my bike on eBay. its a Schwinn S40 DSX that i bought in August of 2005 at target for $200. since then i have invested in over $1600 worth of upgrades, (ie, Marzocchi fork, Fox vanilla shock, mavic wheels, etc..) basically, everything except the frame and setapost is after market. the frame is only a single pivot, it greatly resembles the cannondale Gemini, but it has numerous scratches, paint chips, and cable rub all over, but the rest of the components work 100% and dont have alot of damage. most of these parts i've only had for a few months.

so getting to my question, should i sell the bike as a whole or break it down and post each set of parts (Deore drivetrain, complete brake set, wheelset w/ tires...) individually. i question wether or not someone will want the bike because it has such a crappy frame. and also, any idea how much i should sell it for, as a whole?

ive already tried craigslist for my area. i posted it for $1400 and i got a few ppl saying they'll send a check for $3400 and pay for $2000 shipping. yea right, thats bull. just a load of fraud.

i plan to keep the frame and pass it on to a friend of mine whos just getting into cycling.

ALSO, any ideas for a new bike? im selling to upgrade. i have a budget, so i would like to keep the frame under $500 w/ an air shock. doesnt have to be really fancy or anything, but i cant stand this bike anymore. i plan on buying the build kit from JensonUSA.com (the $500 set) and a new Fox fork. what fork should i get for under $500?

Why would you spend that kind of money on such a low quality bike.
I'd break the bike down and give the frame to your buddy. You may want to consider keeping the upgrades for your next project.

As far as trying to sell the upgrades I don't believe you will ever re-coup your money, your $1600 worth of upgrades are worth about $200 in todays market of used components.

Not trying to pop your bubble but as it stands you have $1800 invested in a bike that's worth around $300 if you choose to sell it whole.
I just sold a Trek ST 120 Alum. Y- frame the bike cost $1200 new and had LX and higher components and only got $200. I also have a Trek 5200 that is basically new and have $3000 invested with upgrades and am asking $600 for it and can't sell it.

Like i said Not trying to pop your bubble but the market for used bikes and equipment is crap.

before i say any thing y would u spend that kind of money of such a piece of junk??? you could have gotten a bike that will last you for life with that money!!!!!!!!!!

if u keep it in one piece but invest an other 50 bucks on new paint job then u should get around 200 bucks at least but if u break it apart and sell it u have a better chance of squezzing out more money.but dont sell it on e bay u will get ripped there. and personally i am intrested in buying ur fork and fox shock. (to bad i am low on budget right now)an other choice is to sell the fork and see how much u can get out of it then sell the fox shock and use the extra money to buy a mid range specialized hardtail frame which is lighter and cost less. the reassemble what you still got left over from your old bike on to the new frame the you will get a top notch new bike!!

a frame with a rear air shock alone will run you 5 bills. just go to your local bike shop and get a low end specialized or g. fisher or something. you wont be able to build anything great for $500 so just get a whole bike. and btw no one is going to buy a crap frame with some decent components. sorry. keep them for future use and give that frame to your buddy.

Do you know what kind of mountain bike you could have bought for $1,800 ??????? You would'nt be upgrading now!!! I'd say you're in for a MAJOR loss of money. No serious rider is going to touch a Target frame. And used parts won't be worth half their original cost.

You're joking, right ? Who'd invest $1,600 in a Target bike ? Target bikes are JUNK, even brand new. I'd take it apart, throw away that cheap frame, and sell the parts...You're going to lose ALOT of money, pal...

Break it down. You probably will not get as much money as a whole bike with all the upgrades, as you would selling them individually.
