Two words: Leap Frog. Those toys are FANTASTIC, and they'll still be playing with them long after they've technically outgrown them. The build reading, math, and other development skills, and they aren't so noisy that they'll drive you crazy. You can really get involved with them in the learning process.

I can't speak to girl's toys, but I am well acquainted with boy's toys. The Rescue Heroes line are great role-playing and imagination toys. The Leap Frog toys are all really great learning toys. Books are always a hit in my house. Elefun is a good game at that age. Little people sets are always good, too. If your little boy is starting to like dinosaurs, the BC line is good. Some of the simplest toys are still the best ones, like puzzles, blocks and musical rhythmn instruments.

Oh and I already preordered him Cars with the lithographs from the Disney Store which I'm going to give him at his birthday party.

LeapFrog products are AWESOME! I have had a leapster for my four year old sense she was just barely 2. It still works perfect and they are fun and educational! They also have Fridge Phonics, the are alphabet magnets for the fridge, but the child puts the letter in the special thing and it tells the letter and the letter sound and sings, it's really cute and a great way to teach ABC's!
I just love all of LeapFrog products!

I got my daughter a Tickle Me Elmo TMX. When she laughs, she now sounds exactly like Elmo. Isn't that really cute? I learned all about it through this site http://www.upkb.com/elmotmx.php
