Because for some reason they think you can just snap right out of it without any help!! And how about the big one "It's all in your head you don't need to take that pill" or they ask you a million and one times "What's the matter with you"!!! And by this time you want to scream at the top of your lungs..LOL!! I can laugh about it, because I am laughing at me. I suffer from it and take an anti-depressant for it!! Well hon I hope I answered your question or at least helped put a smile on your face!! smiles.

Oh, it's one of those things. You have to experience it to really know what it feels like and even then you don't understand it or want to accept it happening to you...so it's not surprising that other people have a hard time with it. We are just coming into the realization of how widespread it is and I think a lot is because of the world we live in and the things we have to cope with in this life. Nothing is easy anymore. Everything takes a lot out of us and it's hard to get it all done and it you are not healthy it is evern harder. That's my opinion. I am now disabled, lost my job, they won't give me LTD through work, Had serious surgery, can't work, Pain 24-7, and I am only getting a paltry sum if and when I get Social security disability and I don't look sick, so..I deal with people thinking I'm just fine. All this at once. I'm a little depressed right now.

People have kept the stereotypes that Mental Health = Craziness because the understanding that depression is chemically based is new information.
There is a lot of misunderstanding and stereotyping of therapies for mental illnesses and disorders.

because they really don't understand it. a lot of ppl think you can just get over it by thinking good thoughts or exercising, etc. those things can be helpful for situational depression, and can be helpful with clinical depression. but medication and/or therapy is needed for clinical depression...it does not go away. you need to take meds for the chemical imbalance. rapid cycling bi-polar disorder runs in my family...i got the depressive part, not the manic part.
there is a real need for more public awareness and empathy.
**addendum** i read all the answers to this question and want to thank everyone for the intelligent comments...even though this wasn't my question...you all are right-on, and very emathetic, wtg.

becasue the people that just have the down in the dumps feeling once in a while say they can snap back in no time... and they dont understand that people with clinical depression CAN NOT DO THAT. Its like telling your diabetes to go away and it wont. Depression is a real thing

Because ppl think it's just something you should be able to snap out of by yourself. They don't understand that it is an illness...ppl don't go up to cancer patients and say..."come on, snap out of it." or " you just need to think happy thoughts." No. They have an illness and it gets treated. Same with depression. So just try your best to ignore the a$$holes and do what you gotta do to get treated.

because they think that depression is not an illness, but an excuse and being lazy. this is false and that is why some people don't get the help they need, because people don't take them seriously.

I think it is very hard to understand unless one has been there. So just remember that if people seem not to be compassionate I am sure they dont really know how bad this can get. You could suggest they speak to ur doctor and he may be able to explain what is happening ok Best of luck Curious 2006

unless you have experienced depression , you can not begin to understand its effects. first off at the height of your illness one actually believes that they are normal and every one else is whacked. a over powering feeling of hopelessness , total exhaustion followed with days of sleep ,for sleep is your only escape from yourself. the list can go on and on.
This just a wee bit of what one goes through with depression.
Now if you are talking about normal folks not understanding .The question is how can they?? it is like a man understanding menses ,child birth ,or a mothers love for her child.or even understanding the thought process of their wife. these are abstract concepts for one who has never lived through these things. while we may have sympathy and compassion one can never fully grasp what they have never experienced.

People don' take depression seriously because they think, "Oh, just some mood swings, they'll get over it" Especially if they're a woman or teenager, "Or just PMSing" or "Oh, teenage mood swings" And by the time they find out it's not just that, it'll be too late
