It's a blow to a person especially if they have to get help doing what they did on there own before the stroke. I have never heard of anyone with increased self esteem after a stroke.

BTDTGTTS!!
You are confused at the onset. then you come out of it after a couple of days, with part or ALL of your body not working. As the brain " rewires " itself, you start to regain some control of motor functions. This can take MONTHS or YEARS. The memories of certain events and your knowlege of certain things are GONE and you have to relearn them all over again.
You can let other people do everything for you or try to relearn how to do it on your own. This depends on the severity of the stroke.
I hate to say it, but some people can't even feel after a stroke.
Others never give up, never surrender. I won't.
Clinical Depression hits about 40% of stroke victims, and starts IMMEDIATELY after the victim's stroke.

My brother had a stroke and the doctors said it was quite common for depression to set in. The person's life is greatly changed and they struggle to do basic things, so it's natural to feel down about that. They can prescribe anti-depressants to help overcome that, so the person feels better and can work on their therapy.

I think confused. They always say if you think someone has symptoms of a stroke to ask basic question and if they can not answer them they may have actually had a stroke.

it differs from person to person. if they lose some of their memory and they are taking physical therapy and trying remember but can't completely remember, then they might be frustrated that they can't remeber. it depends on their personality. some might just give up. it's hard though after one has a stroke. my grandma did years ago and right after she wanted us to correct her when she said the wrong name or something so she could get back to normal faster and her memory.
