I've had that happen several times when I was trying to figure out what was under the house and had the trap on the porch, and when I saw I had a coon, I put on thick gloves as a precaution. The coon shrunk back aganst the opposite end of the trap while I opened the door. I stood beside the trap, not in front of the door, and the coon just fled for the woods. He never even offered to try to bite. After that first time, I caught the same coon again a few times, and he would just patiently wait for me to carry the trap outdoors, set it down, and open the door for him to escape.
Raccoons are cute, but they are also dirty and destructive and can kill a cat in one quick shake if the cat dares to challenge them. Most cats stay out of the way of coons but an occasional cat who likes to start fights will pick a fight with a coon, which is usually the first and last fight a cat has with a coon. If you're scared the coon might tangle with cats around your house, you may want to take him to a woods or wildlife area and release him there, although there are so many coons living even in city areas, its impossible to keep more of them from coming around.
Opossums are another creature I've had get into my trap, and they are harmless. They have wicked looking teeth and will show them off, but I've never had an opossum show any aggression toward me whatsoever. In fact when I lived on a farm, opossums used to eat peacefully alongside the barn cats.

Call your local game & fish department or animal control if you're really worried. They can bite when they're scared but if you can use something to release the catch (a wire hanger stretched out works) and pull the door up, it will probably take off and ignore you. Watch it first to see if it's sick or wounded -don't mess with that- game &fish. He's probably ok overnight (how big is the trap?) but you might want to put something around the cage so nothing messes with him (a barrier of some kind- makesure he can breathe).

I had trouble with a raccoon and neither the city or county would come do anything (they said they were not licenesed). If you cannot get city or couty to come get it, call an animal control agent from yellowpages. Maybe they will give you a discount being its already caught.

First put food in front of the cage.
Just undo the latch somewhat so the raccoon can get out. Then get into the house.
That way you will have time to escape.
You won't be attacked, he wants out not to attack you.

Call Animal Control immediately and make sure you don't touch the raccoon, if it's too friendly or too vicious; it might have rabies. Just keep an eye on it until they come.

Contact your local animal control and they can come and get it. Do not handle it. Racoons can carry Rabies and can be pretty mean.
