A large vein is needed to perform dialysis. Most patients (if not all) in an emergency or short term situation needing dialysis have a large bore catheter such as a Hickman, Quinton, or Groshong catheter placed for easy access of pulling blood, filtering it, and finally returning it back into the body. Peoples veins can't stand up to this kind of treatment and you can't be in the middle of dialysis and take the chance that a regular iv could fail (and you'd need 2 iv's one going in and one going out). Hemodialysis is a process where blood will be taken out from the body, being filtered (toxin being removed) and the blood will drain back into the body. This process will be done by the hemodialysis machine. A good venous access is compulsory to ensure the process goes smoothly for the blood to be drained out and in again. Two good veins are needed- one in and one out.

my dad is on dialysis, he had to get this tube in his chest thats what they hook to the machine when they do your dialysis it's an easy procedure.so they can run the blood through the machine to clean it takes about 4 hours about 3 times a week if you don't have it the phosphorous and other minerals don't empty out of your body. you well need that done good luck

Umm. If you are going to run the blood through a machine to purify it, you've got to get the blood out somehow...

If you are having a dialysis of your blood you would have to have the vein assessed in order for them to do it, that's my opinion.
