Yes clif has nailed it
A 390 is a ford "FE" series big block
so are the 332,352,360,390.406,410,427,428 .
the 361 and 391 are truck motors but a lot of racers would take the steel crank out of a 391 and turn down the snout.
the 429/460 are the 385 series motors and do not interchange parts.

It is an FE block, but not a y block. Those were the 272,292, and 312 ci. engines made until 1957. The FE included the 332,352,360,390, and 428, the 427 and 406 were heavily modified by the factory for racing, and were also FE type blocks. They can be identified by the intake that was used as part of the head as the pushrods went through it. Also the 429 and 460 are not FE engines

It's referred to as an FE engine. The Y-block was the
V-8 family that preceded the FE. The engines that
followed the FEs were called the 385 series and were
poured at Lima OH. They were of 429 and 460 c.i.
displacements.

It's definitely one of the Ford-Edsel, FE family, first designed in 1958 for the Ford-332, Tbird-352 and Edsel 361ci. later stroked to 390, 406, 410, 427 and 428, ofter called Ford's Big Block! You can recognize them from their narrow head and large intake manifolds.
not to be confused with the 385 series Lima 429 and 460's :)

Yep, it's a FE series big block. There were also other big block fords that were not in the FE (Ford-Edsel) engine family, and thus there is no interchange.
It is true that the bottom end is constructed much like the earlier Y blocks and are very stout, but they are not called as such.

390 block was born from the 352 block back in the early 60's. Its a large heavy block made of cast iron. 360.361.391,330 are the same block if I remember. I think that the 410 in Mercury's was the same.

It is a big block engine mostly used in trucks. However Ford did use this engine in some automobile applications.
