I am a cutter and have been for 7 years. Don't start cutting. First of all, you might feel better for a little while after you cut, but the depression comes back in the end. Also, it's the toughest addiction I have ever dealt with. Giving up drugs (meth, coke heroin), alcohol, and my eating disorder were about 20 times easier then stopping cutting. It's not worth it. You really should call the 1-800-DONTCUT. If your self-conscious about talking to them about your problems, you could also just call them up and talk to them about "your friend" who cuts. it's not just a crisis hot-line, it's an information center also. And the elastic band thing others talked about, that's good too. You can also hold an ice cube in your hand till it melts, although I personally prefer to put an orange in the freezer till it is frozen, and then squeeze that. It stays frozen longer and therefore the effect is better.

When you cut, if you do it when you're not in a state of mind like sadness or anger you'll feel it a lot more than if you are in a state of mind. I just recently started back up on cutting after nearly a 2 year hiatus.
No matter what it will hurt, either right then when you cut or later when you calm down. Showers are a ***** when you have fresh cuts and hiding them from everyone gets tiring. Personal word from a cutter, don't start it. You'll be chained for life. No matter how long you go without cutting, you'll always have the scars and you will always have the urges to go back.

It does, as previous answerers have said, release endorphins in the brain that make you feel good. Everybody does it for different reasons and it affects everyone differently. Some people do it to feel the pain and others don't feel it at all. A lot of it really depends on the reasons behind the self-injury. For many of the people who do it, it is the only way they know of to cope.

I have not but have had a friend do this and believe me when I tell you they have regretted it ever since. It doesn't help anything and actually makes it worse.
If you have a chance get this book at the library: How to stop worrying and start living by Dale Carnegie. It's a great book for all to read!

i'm 24 and i have been a cutter since i was 11 and i still struggle with the urges of wanting to cut but with the help of my therapist i been doing pretty well. sometimes when people cut it helps them 'release' pain, some want to feel 'real' it all depends on the person.

don't cut yourself. I used to do it for years and i still have relapses. it is not even aobut the pain. i have soo many scars that will never go away and it can be embarassing sometimes. Have you tried writing in a journal? sounds korny but it works. write to me and i'll try to help you more.
