Therefore, the statement, "Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius" means that the more intelligent person takes an average person's jealousy as a tribute, or as a paying of respect to the superior intellect.

Average person recognizes the genius and that the average person will not be a genius so jealousy occurs. Some feel the recognition & jealousy are a tribute (honor).

Sarcasm...... Its means that those that are not genius are jealous of those who are; that the jealousy showed by average folks is a badge of honor to those who are genius level. Further, it connotes that average folks are mediocre (ho hum) and jealousy is an emotion only embodied by the mediocre class. To me - it kind of says - that genius level people can accept jealousy from the mediocre non-genius people as a means of feeling superior. That's how I read that statement.

it says that jealousy takes over the people who either put themselves down, have a low self esteem or are insecure. as you know, jealousy arises from factors such as insecurities, maybe lack of trust, a low self esteem lacks something that they see in others such as happiness. the person who is smart in times in which he or she are put in situations where they could lose their temper because of jealousy do not because they are more rational and know better. they know that being jealous is just pure poison in cases and they just act as though nothing is bothering them. on the other hand the person who loses their cool over something and becomes green with jealousy and envy will get nowhere except in an argument and make a fool out of themselves since these people do not know what jealousy can do. what it means is that the person who is smarter is the one who is quite and does not throw a tantrum when it comes to being jealous. the only way that you can let jelousy in is if you want to which many smart and wise people do not do but rather let it pass them and not affect them since in the long run they will win.

a tribute is like giving a recognition
so the someone who is so-so or mediocre gives recognition to someone who is genius-like by being jealous.

Well why is one jealous? They want what someone else has....wouldn't it be nice to be a genius.......someone less than genius would be jealous of genius. That is a tribute because others desire it. Therefore, it must be good.
