Ask them for their record. They all have the stats and they will give it to you. If they dont then they are hiding a bad record. Also ask an attorney for references. This is not at all uncommon. Call and follow up on the references.

I paid $20,000 to an attorney firm years ago to help a relative out who was in trouble and in jail awaiting court. One of my relatives said they wanted to go with this attorney and so I wrote the check to help out (as this was a close loved one of mine) as I was the only one in the family who could afford to pay.
What happened? I went to talk to the attorney myself, wrote the check out and then ........NOTHING. This attorney drove to see him in jail twice but did nothing at all to help him get out and he was innocent (it was a you said I said situation). The attorney just wrote hours down that he was researching for the case to justify stealing my money. He did nothing and my loved one had to take a plea as his hands were tied. I was not throwing more money down the toilet. This attorney cared nothing for him and what was going to happen without proper councel.

So be careful, check them out well and go with your GUT instinct. Some of these guys are sleeze bags and just what the money.

You don't/cant.

The best thing to do to find a decent attorney is to do the following:

1. Locate a name of attorney
2. Go online and search the bar website for the state you live in. See if he has any complaints about him/her
3. Go online and see if his/her name has been in the news, and if it has, why.
