I'm getting a dog and I'm happy, but I faced a problem.... we go to Mexico for vacation and we have to take our dog, and the problem is what happens if the dog needs to use the potty and we're on a highway on our way to Mexico, I have ideas but I think none of them will work. And my dog is a Chihuahua.

ummmm............ get a crate to put the dog in while traveling. Make frequent stops to use the potty. Being that you will be on the road for awhile the dog wont be eatting or drinking as if it were at home, so there shouldnt be any need to stop any more often than you normally would if you were traveling with out him /her. Be sure everytime you stop that the dog does go potty just so there wont be any accidents. And, if by chance there is one, be prepared to clean it up. Pack a small "doggy" bag, this should include: tissues, small ziplock baggies (for dropplings), baby wipes to clean messes, and a larger ziplock bag for trash. If all else fails have a few puppy pampers on hand and use them if necessary. LOL I know people who do this!

Congratulations on your Chichuahua, aren't they just the cutest?
Now, your problem is halfy solved, your dog is small! Your dog can be easily trasportated, but they have little bladders.

a) There should be pit stops along the way to Mexico. Each one you see, stop your little pooch their for a little break.
b) If you see any towns, stop where there is grass. Your dog doesn't make a bit mess.
c) Bring paper towels and paper bags. Spread around in car. If he/she does his/her business, use the paper towel, and throw away to the nearest trashcan...oh yeah, bring Oust.

I hope I answered your question! Luckily, your dog is small, so he/she isn't going to be a big of mess.

A lot of rest stops have pet areas. Keep him in a kennel during the car ride.

FYI make sure you check with the USDA export department to get proper documentation for your puppy before going to mexico (if you haven't done so already). There is a standard USDA form that needs to be filled out it needs to be done by your vet.

i travelled over 5000 miles with my jack russell terrier in the car this summer. dog friendly tips:

state rest stops have wonderful areas to walk your pet, stretch your legs and have clean restrooms in addition to maps available. plus they are free!

sonic drive-ins have restrooms (located outside) that you can take your dog in with you (don't leave your pet in the car), grassy area for the dog to do its business and quick inexpensive food.

leaving the country - check with your vet and also border patrol. you might not have problems taking your dog OUT of the country but you may not be able to bring it back into the US. do your homework and you will be fine!

happy trails!
