If you want to make a good beer, invest some money in some good equipment. I did the "home kit" before, and while the beer was drinkable, it wasn't what I would consider a good "home brew." If you really want to make good beer, it will cost you if you buy the proper equipment, but your results will be great.

+ The only really special tool you need is an air lock.
The ingredients are Malt or grain extract, (you could boil Wheaties Breakfast serial to get it) Hops (you can buy or grow it) and brewers yeast (I think you should buy this) plus water.
Boil 5 gal of water and malt for an hour. Add hops about two ounces before it stops boiling. Cool the mix to room temp 70 to 75 degrees. Mix the yeast in some warm 70 degree water. Place the mix in your container and add the yeast. Immediately place the air lock on and don't take it off for a couple of weeks. Store at around 70 to 75 degrees for this time. Pour it into jugs or bottles seal them and refrigerate it until you are going to drink it.
You now have a simple beer. If you spend money on good ingredients and equipment it will be better, but that is the basics. I find the cooking and cooling time to take several hours so be patient. Also a good idea is to write everything down.
One of the simplest and easiest is Alaskan Bush beer I will try to place a link below.
Clean equipment and bottles is a must if you don't want to be running to the bathroom soon after drinking it.

If you've never done it before, I'd suggest a kit.
You can get them with all the necessary ingredients, just add water and bucket :-)
If you want to be little more ambitious, locate a good book for recipes (there are thousands of different kinds of beet that you can make) - is Ken Bravery's book still in print? - and find a local home-brew store for ingredients and utensils.
DON'T be tempted to improvise, until you've learned a little, and know what you're doing... at that point, experimentation can be fun, though sometimes messy :-)
Simply, beer is made by the fermentation of sugar and/or malt, sometimes hops in various forms - the exact mix and ingredients being determined by the kind of beer you want to get..
You also select the type of yeast that you want to use, in accordance with the desired results - that's why everything must be very clean and sterile before you start...you don't want any wild yeast getting into the act.
You add all your ingredients to a large container of clean, yeast-free water, cover and keep warm until the frothing stops (a matter of a week or two). Filter it, strain it, chemically polish it if you must, then bottle and cap it, and set it aside to test your patience... :-)
