We have a 10 month old puppy. He's very lovable and energetic. When we get home from work we let him out and stay with him several times. In the evenings we walk him for about 45 minutes. We just got back from a walk and ten minutes later I caught him pooping in the basement. He doesn't go anywhere else, and he doesn't do it when we're gone. He does it if it's raining and he doesn't want to stay out and just other random times like tonight. Any suggestions?

Part of it may be his scent is still there, dogs like to go in the same place. Clean the area well, a white vinegar solution makes a good odor eliminator, but any product that eliminates (not covers odors but removes them) should work.

Is he relieving himself on his walks? If not, you need to simply stand in an area you know he will go in and wait. When he goes, as he is in the act, use some phrase you are comfortable with (I use 'go potty'). After he finishes, tell him, GOOD POTTY and give him a treat.

Reinforce that relieving himself in appropriate areas is a good thing. The next night, go back to the same area, and say, "go potty" (or whatever you decided to use), and wait until he does. Repeat the praise and treat giving.

You also need to clean any spot in the basement you have found his droppings in with a cleaner that will remove the scent to his nose, so he won't be tempted to repeat the action. Dogs like to relieve themselves in the same spot, mostly because it smells the way it does. I recommend Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle.

Why on earth is he in a basement by himself anyways? Keep him upstairs with you.
