Many churches around the world have beautifully painted ceilings. Perhaps, though, you are referring to the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City. The ceiling, a masterpiece of Renaissance art by Michelangelo, is world famous.

More details: He was reluctant at first to paint but he was threatened to be ex-communicated by the church if he refused.
The cardinals were scandalized at first about those nude drawings of angels on the ceiling.
Michael Angelo did not finish the whole church so Rafael did the murals of Sistine Chapel.
