Hi

Firstly, you need to make a distinction between 'Polynesian' and 'Maori', if by Polynesian you are accepting the definition of Polynesia as - 'a large grouping of over 1,000 islands scattered over the central and southern Pacific Ocean'. In which case, New Zealand identifies 'Maoris' and 'Pacific Peoples' differently.

Pacific peoples are highly concentrated in the Auckland area, whereas Maoris are more widely spread although again the largest grouping is in the Auckland area. I have given below the 2001 snapshot census results for both Maori and Pacific peoples which shows the distribution. Unfortunately, the results of the 2006 census are not yet available.

Lastly, if you are looking for the centre of 'traditional' Maori culture, then I would suggest the Rotorua area would be of greater interest.

They are distributed through out the country - all towns/cities will have Maori/Polynesian people however you will find some places are more touristy than others... places such as Rotorua (in the North Island) have Maori Culture groups that perform traditional Maori customs for visitors to watch.
